Detmar Blow

Biography

Detmar Blow was born in Stroud in 1963, and was educated at Harrow School and the London School of Economics, where he read history. After leaving LSE, he did a law conversion course and was called to the Bar in 1989.

During his seven years as a barrister, he worked closely with his late wife Isabella Blow to support her fashion career and accompanied her on fashion expeditions to New York, Rio de Janeiro, Iceland, France, Italy, Denmark. He left his legal career in 1998 to set-up with Isabella and Stuart Shave the gallery 'Modern Art' in Shoreditch, showing artists such as Tim Noble and Sue Webster, Nigel Cooke, Jake and Dinos Chapman, and Jonathan Meese. Modern Art was one of the most successful contemporary art galleries in London and was at the forefront of the explosion in the East End art scene in the late 1990s. In 2005 he and Isabella set up Blow de la Barra gallery in the west end, showing many Central and South American artists. In 2008 Blow de la Barra staretd trading as Blow111 gallery between Lisbon and London.

Detmar currently lives between Lisbon, London and Gloucestershire, writing his biography of Isabella, doing some art dealing and learning Portuguese.
