Henry Hemming
Biography
Soon after graduating from university in Newcastle with a 1st in History, Henry Hemming began his year-long journey through the Middle East making art and putting on exhibitions (in Tehran, Muscat and Amman) before arriving in Baghdad just after the city fell in 2003.
A series of international exhibitions emerged out of this expedition as well as the publication of a visual account of the journey, Off Screen, published by Booth-Clibborn Editions, and a written narrative: Misadventure in the Middle East, published by Nicholas Brealey Publishing in 2007. Described as 'compulsively readable' by Anthony Sattin in The Sunday Times, 'a once-in-a-lifetime journey' by Colin Thubron, 'Exuberant and thoughtful' in the Evening Standard, Hemming was hailed as 'a fresh new voice, idealistic, engaging and human' by Justin Marozzi in The Spectator.
In 2008 Henry's latest book In Search of the English Eccentric was published by John Murray. This was an account of his attempt to find England's last remaining eccentrics whilst updating the term 'eccentric' for the 21st century. From a former-sheep pen on the Isle of Skye inhabited by The Leopard Man, through to the front seat of Pete Doherty's car, this is a witty anthropological exploration of marginal characters in English society. He is currently writing a new book for John Murray in between working towards his next exhibition.
