Synopsis

Enter the Mirrorscape - an amazing world limited only by the artist's imagination... Fulfilling the dream of a lifetime, Melkin Womper is apprenticed to a master painter, Ambrosius Blenk. Son of a village weaver, Mel is over-awed by the master's richly coloured and vividly detailed paintings. He is particularly amazed by the colours, because there are no colours back home. To have colour in your life, you have to buy the Pleasure, and the sinister scarlet-robed Fifth Mystery own the rights to such Pleasures. Soon, Mel and his new friends Ludo and Wren find themselves caught in a power struggle between the Mystery and the master. One that involves stepping through paintings into a world where the bizarre is commonplace and all logic is irrelevant. A world where angels, pyramid mazes, imaginary monsters, talking houses and - most importantly - the simple paintbrush all combine to form a hugely original and deeply compelling fantasy. This is a thrilling adventure filled with fantastical creatures in an incredibly visual secret world.

Reviews

"It is a firework of inspiration and homage to art. Wilks' book is bubbling with ideas, tremendously fast and funny - but most of all, the book is paying homage to the genius of art. "

Der Spiegel

"A truly great children's book with a very nice idea - imaginative, exciting and humorous, not to mention brilliant. "

Media-Mania.de

"An endearing hero, a cast of incredible characters and a plot that will keep you breathlessly turning the pages. Mirrorscape is magical and enthralling. "

Jenny Nimmo, author of the Charlie Bone series.

"This is a hugely original fantasy adventure where imagination knows no bounds. A truly exciting read."

Booktrust

"Wilks has crafted an enchanting world where anything is possible in the eye of the beholder. The imagery in Mirrorscape is beautifully crafted and brought the book to life even more for me... Mirrorscape is a great start to a series that will have you glued to the story down to the very last page. "

Fantastic Book Review

"I really, really enjoyed [Mirrorscape] and I've never read anything like it. I kept on reading until midnight to finish it (don't tell my mum). I liked the idea that you could paint a painting and then go into that world. "

Lucy (10)

"Mirrorscape is one of the most original concepts I have ever come across. You have the ingredients for a stunning fantasy series that is guaranteed to keep you enthralled. "

www.eternalnight.co.uk

"As with all the best fantasy, the real excitement is the human story, which involves betrayal, friendship and a whole range of qualities (and their opposites), a titanic struggle between good and evil, and some very fine writing. "

Story Time Books for Kids

"The special thing that Wilks brings to this tale is the artist's eye. "

Philip Ardagh, Guardian Review

"A colourful and imaginative tale, its people and places expertly rendered. "

DeathRay

"Mirrorscape is a novel that will definitely stay in the mind long after being read."

Fantasy Book Review

"Wilks, whose impressive drawings preface the novel, depicts an elaborate world with detailed descriptions, fast-paced action, and lessons of friendship. The dynamic cast of characters will undoubtedly play important roles in the remaining books of this trilogy, which is primed to entice readers of high fantasy. "

Kimberly Garnick, Booklist

"much of the action takes place... within a series of magical landscape paintings - some stocked with a rousing array of Hieronymus Bosch-style monsters. Positively riddled with captures, rescues and hair's-breadth escapes, not to mention melodramatically sinister villains and quirky artistic types, this airy romp makes a refreshing change of pace from the general run of high-toned sword-and-sorcery epics. "

Kirkus Review

"Mirrorscape is one of the most unique and enthralling fantasy stories I've ever read... I heartily commend Wilks for his creative and exciting plot; there wasn't a moment in the story that failed to capture my interest. "

The Book Muncher

"Devilish angels, walking houses, impossible contraptions and monsters galore collide in a no-holds-barred battle of the brushes. Wilks creates a chaotic, whimsical romp that will appeal to the mind's eye."

Publishers Weekly

"Boys who love to turn pages quickly to stay in the midst of the action will find this book hard to put down. It’s just as much fun for girls to read. The author has created a character girls can identify with even as they cheer for Mel to overcome and paint his way into triumph. "
