Submissions

Mulcahy Conway Associates wants to do an exceptionally good job of representing each of its writers’ needs. So, we take on new authors cautiously, ensuring that there is a good fit between their requirements and our agency.

The principals of the business, Ivan Mulcahy and Jonathan Conway, read all new submissions ourselves. We are not in a position, therefore, to accept unsolicited novels, as the volume of reading would be unmanageable. As a result we accept only unsolicited non-fiction manuscripts or proposals submitted to us. We do accept unsolicited fictional work from writers whose previous fiction has been published by a leading UK, US, Australian or Irish publisher.

We cannot acknowledge receipt of material, nor can we accept responsibility for anything you send us, so please retain a copy of all material submitted. Please note that we do not represent scripts for theatre, film or television.

Non-fiction proposals

A review of the authors and books areas of this website will demonstrate the diversity of non-fiction writers that Mulcahy Conway Associates represent. Your subject may be a profound or light-hearted one and your style may be anything from authoritative to quirky. What we seek is a book topic that will attract a general readership, written by an author who is appropriately qualified. The most important element is always the quality of the writing.

We do not accept non-fiction proposals written for children or young adult audiences.

A non-fiction proposal must contain detailed but concise information about your subject, and about the qualifications and experience that will enable you to write the book. You do not need to have written the whole book, but it is important to have at least a short sample of the material, a brief synopsis of your proposal or manuscript, and an accompanying letter of typically one or two pages. Please summarise any competing books on the subject, why your proposal distinguishes itself, and any other information about yourself that will be of relevance to your written work.

Please let us know if your proposal is on submission to other agencies. Many submissions are sent to us and we will always reply to your enquiry, though this may take some time due to the volume of submissions that we receive.

Mulcahy Conway Associates does not charge reading fees. Please include a stamped address envelope if you would like your manuscript to be returned, and state this clearly on the submission.
